What cookies are
Cookies are small files a website saves in your browser so it can remember things between visits. Similar tools, such as local storage and the tiny images in emails known as pixels or web beacons, work in much the same way, so this page covers them too.
This site
This site uses Google Analytics to count visits, which sets cookies as described below. It doesn’t use advertising trackers. Some of the other services it uses can set their own cookies too.
Services that may set cookies
- Google Analytics. I use it to see how many people visit, which pages they read and which links and sign-up forms they use. It sets two cookies, named _ga and _ga_ followed by an ID, which last up to two years so it can tell new visitors from returning ones. Visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland get no Google Analytics cookies, and Google’s advertising features are switched off for everyone. To opt out on every site, use Google’s opt-out browser add-on.
- YouTube videos. Videos play in YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode, and nothing loads from YouTube until you press play. Once you do, YouTube may set cookies or store data in your browser under Google’s own privacy policy.
- The contact form’s spam check. The contact page uses a security check from Cloudflare to tell people from bots. It may read information about your browser and device, and may store data in your browser, to do that.
- Affiliate links. When you click a product link, the store you land on, for example Amazon, may set cookies on its own site so it knows the visit came from me.
- Emails. If you sign up for my emails, they may contain pixels that show whether an email was opened and which links were clicked.
Your choices
You can block or delete cookies in your browser’s settings, and many email apps let you turn off loading images, which stops email pixels. If you block cookies, the videos and the contact form may not work properly. To opt out of email tracking completely, use the unsubscribe link in any of my emails.
